Most people introduce themselves by their job title:
“I’m a project manager.”
“I’m a senior analyst.”
“I’m a software engineer.”
But here’s the problem—titles don’t pay bills. Titles don’t create freedom. Titles don’t put you in demand.
Results do.
When you start thinking of yourself as a Company of One, you stop letting HR labels define you. You start focusing on what customers—your boss, your clients, your team—actually need and what you can deliver.
That’s what this week’s podcast is about: flipping the script so you’re not defined by a title but by the value you create. Let me give you the highlights.
1. Start With the Customer’s Need (Not Your Title)
Your boss or client doesn’t care about your title. They care about their problem being solved.
Think FedEx: nobody asks, “Who’s the logistics coordinator?” They just want to know, “Did my package arrive on time?”
Shift: Instead of saying, “I’m in quality control,” say, “I make sure customers never see a bad product.”
2. Translate Skills Into Results That Matter
Having a skill isn’t enough. People don’t buy drills—they buy holes in the wall.
One of my students once told me, “I know Excel.” Big deal. But when he said, “I built a tool that saved my team 10 hours per week,” suddenly his value was obvious.
Shift: Tie every skill to an outcome: revenue gained, time saved, costs reduced.
3. Lean Into the Human Advantage
AI, outsourcing, and automation can replace tasks—but not human creativity, empathy, or leadership.
Steve Jobs wasn’t valuable because he could code. He was valuable because he could see what customers wanted before they did and inspire them with a story.
Shift: Focus on what only you can do: negotiate, persuade, connect, lead. That’s where you become irreplaceable.
4. Communicate Like an Owner
Employees list tasks. Owners talk about results.
Jeff Bezos didn’t say, “I run a website that sells books.” He said, “I’m building the world’s largest online retailer.”
Shift: Change how you describe what you do. Not, “I attended a client call.” Instead: “I clarified their needs so we can save two weeks of rework.”
Faith Connection
At the end of the day, your identity isn’t in a title—or even your skills. It’s in Christ. But because your identity is secure in Him, you’re free to steward your gifts boldly. Don’t bury them under a title. Use them to serve, create, and multiply.
