The 3 Lies Keeping You Trapped in a Job You’ve Outgrown #207

Smart professionals don’t stay stuck because they’re lazy — they stay stuck because they’ve believed these lies for too long.

It’s not about talent.
It’s not about degrees.
It’s not about motivation.

Most of the professionals I work with are smart, accomplished, and hardworking. But they’re stuck — bored in their careers, drained by the day-to-day, and unsure what comes next.

And it usually boils down to three lies they’ve been taught to believe.

In this episode of The Company of One Podcast, I unpack these lies and show you a better path forward.

💥 Lie #1: “I need a perfect plan before I can start.”

This one sounds responsible.
It feels smart.

But the truth is — no one starts with a perfect plan.
They start with motion.

That’s what happened with one of my clients. He kept waiting to map out the perfect side hustle plan… until one conversation turned into a consulting gig. That led to another. Within weeks, he said:

“For the first time in my career, I didn’t feel owned.”

A perfect plan isn’t what got him moving.
A small step did.

⏳ Lie #2: “Now’s not the right time.”

It never feels like the right time.
Kids are busy. Work is chaotic. Life is expensive. You’re tired.

But the reality?

If you keep waiting for the “right time,” you’ll still be in the same spot next year.

You don’t need to leap — just take a step.

😬 Lie #3: “I’m not ready.”

This one hits deep.
But it’s not about being ready. It’s about being afraid — of judgment, of failure, of looking foolish.

That’s normal.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Confidence doesn’t come first. Action does.

When you move, you learn.
When you learn, you grow.
And when you grow, confidence shows up.

🔧 Ready to break free?

If this hit home, I created something to help you move forward:

🎯 The Idea Engine — a free tool with 7 prompts to help you generate a clear, exciting idea and take your first step.

It’s short, actionable, and powerful.

Because the goal isn’t just to dream.
It’s to do.

Dan Koe’s video, “Work Less, Earn More, Enjoy Life,” made me think about that question. He explores the one-person business model: using your interests, skills, and expertise to build a business as a creator, freelancer, coach, or consultant.

I see a connection to the Company of One model I teach, especially for people who already have careers, families, and responsibilities.

You may enjoy your work. You may have spent years becoming good at it. You can value that career and still want more control over your income and time.

How to stop collecting business ideas and start building real options.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to spend months—or even years—thinking about making a change without actually doing anything?

Maybe you’ve considered consulting. Or starting a business. Or investing in real estate. Maybe you enjoy your job but are tired of the bureaucracy and restrictions that come with it.

You keep looking at possibilities.

You watch videos, read books, attend workshops, and talk with friends about what you could do.

But nothing really changes.

I think one reason is simple: There’s no urgency.

Want to Quit Your Job but Don’t Know What to Do Instead?

If you want to quit your job but don’t know what to do instead, start by choosing one kind of work to investigate. Identify what you want to change, notice work you enjoy, and talk with someone already doing it. You can take those steps while you’re still employed.

Here are three questions to help you begin.
