It’s 9:40 on a Tuesday night, and David is sitting in his truck in his own driveway. Engine off. He’s not ready to go inside yet. He just got off a call with his fourth boss in three years, explaining a reorg that folds his team into someone else’s org chart — no new title, no new pay, just another person to prove himself to.
Twenty-two years of experience. A team that hits its numbers every quarter. And he still feels like he has to earn his spot in the room every few months.
That’s not burnout. It’s something else — and most successful, experienced professionals are sitting in that same truck without realizing it.
The project that changed the picture
David couldn’t explain why he felt stuck. Good salary, strong reviews, the person everyone calls when something’s actually broken. Then an old colleague brought him a small outside project — nothing glamorous, the same kind of problem he solves at his day job three times a month.
He took it on nights and weekends. And it felt completely different. Same skill, same brain, same kind of problem he’d solved for 22 years — but this time it mattered.
What actually changed
It wasn’t the money. It wasn’t easier — if anything, it was more work. What changed was that someone chose him specifically, by name, instead of “whoever’s available.” His experience — the part he’d stopped noticing because it was just “his job” — became visible again.
That’s when the questions started: consulting? An LLC? A website? A board seat? Six ideas in two minutes, all over the map.
Where people get it wrong
Most people in David’s position skip the most important question. Instead of asking “what have I actually built,” they jump to “what should I do next.” Without knowing your actual assets, you’re just picking off a menu someone else wrote.
The house you stopped seeing
Live in a house 25 years and you stop noticing the hardwood floors, the workshop, the light through the kitchen window. A realtor walks through for five minutes and points out four things you’d forgotten were valuable. Careers work the same way.
A second story: Marcus
Marcus, a manufacturing engineer, thought his value was the engineering itself. It wasn’t. His real asset was translating technical risk into plain language for non-technical rooms — investors, executives, boards. One meeting turned into a standing advisory arrangement paying more per hour than his salary. He didn’t know that skill had a price tag until someone else put one on it.
Why AI can’t fix this
AI will give you a list — start a business, build a brand, join a board. None of it’s wrong. But it can’t tell you which move fits you until you know your own assets.
Three questions to ask instead
- What problems do people consistently bring to me?
- What do I do naturally that others struggle with?
- If someone hired me directly instead of my employer, what would they be paying for?
