How I Got Job Offers I Never Applied For

Most professionals know that networking works better than job boards. They know the stats. They know the drill. And yet they keep refreshing Indeed and wondering why nothing is moving.

In this episode Dale Callahan shares a story from early in his career — a cold call to a stranger that ended with a job offer he never applied for — and then breaks down the exact framework, six common mistakes, and the daily habit that keeps the whole system working.

The Numbers

  • 85% of jobs are filled through networking (Zippia, HubSpot, 2025 LinkedIn workforce report)
  • 70% of jobs are never posted publicly (CNBC, joingenius.com, 2024-2025)
  • Only 13% of people found work through job boards; 54% through connections (MyPerfectResume, 2025)

The Framework

  • Step 1: Get focused on what you want and what companies interest you. Then ask your contacts for a warm intro — not a job, just a conversation. Lead with who connected you.
  • Step 2: Ask the three questions: How did you get to where you are? What do you love and hate about this? What keeps you up at 3am?
  • Step 3: Follow up every time. Thank you email. LinkedIn connection. Handwritten card if you want to really stand out. Stay in their world.

The Six Mistakes

  • Mistake 1: Making one connection and waiting. This is a numbers game. Keep swinging.
  • Mistake 2: Sending your resume or saying you’re looking. Instant HR trap. You are doing research, not job hunting.
  • Mistake 3: Keeping questions at the surface. This is not a news interview. Go deeper. Let the conversation breathe.
  • Mistake 4: Staying in job search mode. You are exploring, not hunting. The golden retriever story: she got a VP at Coca-Cola by talking about dogs, not her job search.
  • Mistake 5: Poor follow up. Thank you email. Handwritten card. Stay connected without being creepy.
  • Mistake 6: Forgetting you are talking to a human. They are as busy as you are. They do not love this process either. Real conversation beats a pitch every time.

The Daily Habit

Five contacts every morning. Written on paper. Filled in until the list is done. Scan emails for lingering conversations. Check LinkedIn for people worth reaching out to. Reach out to podcast guests you found valuable. The method varies. The habit does not.
